The Waterproofing Of The Mattress Protector
The waterproofing of the mattress pads is ensured by a plasticized membrane, placed on the underside (mattress side). This provides effective protection against dust mites, dust and especially liquids.
Once considered noisy, waterproof membranes are now much more qualitative, both totally impermeable to liquids, and silent. Some membranes also offer better temperature regulation, they are breathable.
Here are the most common membranes found on waterproof mattress protectors or mattress pads:
Polyurethane Membrane
Polyurethane or PU membranes are both waterproof and breathable, but also flexible and quiet. Of better quality than the others, these are the membranes most used in the manufacture of waterproof mattress protectors.
Membrane PEPP
PEPP (Polyethylene Polypropylene) membranes offer total impermeability to the sleeper and great flexibility. They are not very breathable and have the advantage of being completely silent.
Membrane PVC
PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) membranes also form an excellent barrier against liquids, for perfect protection of the mattress. However, it should be noted that they are not breathable and therefore not recommended for people who sweat a lot at night.
What Shape Should I Have For My Waterproof Mattress Protector?
Depending on what you are looking for, the shape of your mattress protector may differ:
Fitted sheet shape: allows you to cover the mattress thanks to its elasticated cap that keeps it in place and protects it perfectly.
Top shape: provides waterproof protection only on the top of the mattress. It is held in place by an elastic band at the four corners of the mattress.
Full cover shape or mattress renovation: covers your mattress entirely. This cover is easy to zip on and take off, and provides total protection. It is an alternative solution to changing mattresses.
Also remember to take into account the height of the cup (it should be slightly larger than the height of the mattress).
Waterproof Or Not?
Whether a mattress protector is waterproof or not, its cups are usually not waterproofed. Indeed, it is especially the mattress top that must be protected, as it is the most likely to come into contact with liquids. For any “normal” use, it is therefore not necessary to have waterproof caps.
